About Neqa in Bristol Bay
Neqa in Bristol Bay is the signature fundraising event to benefit the Bristol Bay Foundation and its mission: to provide higher education and vocational training scholarships to Bristol Bay Native Corporation shareholders and descendants and support cultural heritage activities in the Bristol Bay Region.
Initially conceived in 2018 as the Neqa Derby on the Nushagak River, the event has undergone some evolution. With the passage of time and declining numbers of the Chinook salmon run, Neqa in Bristol Bay transitioned from a derby to a networking event in 2023.
In 2024, we moved our event location to Kulik Lodge in Katmai National Park. This strategic move expands the possibilities for the event, providing a fresh look for the festivities while maintaining our connection to the land and waters of Bristol Bay. We still fishe, but will be transtioned from backtrolling for salmon to fly fishing for trout. There were options for fly outs daily, depending on weather.
Anglers had two choices: either a 3-day trip, or a 4-day trip with an overlapping Celebration Day with both groups. This was a great way to enjoy networking time as a whole group.
The relocation to Kulik Lodge symbolizes the resilience and adaptability of Neqa in Bristol Bay. By choosing a new venue, the event further broadens our horizons, inviting participants to experience the region’s beauty from a different perspective while ensuring the continuation of our mission.
At its core, Neqa in Bristol Bay represents Bristol Bay's communities and their dedication to education, culture, and unity. By attending or supporting this annual event, participants play a crucial role in ensuring that Bristol Bay's heritage remains intact, thriving, and accessible to future generations. Neqa in Bristol Bay is more than just a fundraiser; it's a celebration of our resilience, culture, and shared commitment to a more empowered future for Bristol Bay and its people.
